Main Divide Pinot Gris 2011
The Season
The growing season was influenced by La Nina weather conditions, resulting in a very mild spring, a warm summer with high sunshine hours and a long, lingering autumn. In spite of being dry we had infrequent, but well spaced showers keeping the vines very happy. These conditions enabled us to harvest beautifully ripened, healthy fruit .
The Vineyard and vines
The grapes were grown on well drained stony soil in the Waipara Valley. The rows of vines are orientated in a north south direction to ensure good sunlight exposure on each side of the vine and to assist even ripening of the berries.
The Harvest and winemaking
The grapes were picked in separate batches over several weeks in April, the exact timing in each patch being determined by regular tasting of the berries. The aim was to produce a spectrum of ripe aromas and flavours in the finished wine. The juice obtained by gentle pressing of the fruit was then fermented in stainless tanks at cool temperatures. This was to help the wine maintain its vibrant, varietal purity without losing any crispness. It was, however, kept on its natural yeast deposit (sur lie) for a short while before bottling, to add a little twist of complexity.
The Wine
The enticing bouquet and flavours suggest passion-fruit, guavas and lychees, supported by crushed herbs and ripe gooseberries. Whiffs of Turkish musk and exotic spice add an extra dimension. The finish is dry, crisp and tangy.
Wine in moderation is a natural health food
